ABOUT US

Skipper’s Pet Products began in 2013 as the brainchild of former fish merchant Steve Moore who has a long history with the local fish industry and is fiercely proud of Grimsby’s rich heritage and status as ‘Europe’s Food Town’.

Being based in Grimsby at the heart of the UK’s fishing industry, Steve saw an opportunity to produce high quality, natural dog treats using ethically sourced raw materials from sustainable fisheries.

Fish co-products from the human chain like Fish Skin would be used to ensure less of the Fish goes to waste, and recycled energy would be used to dry them at a low temperature making sure none of the intrinsic values are damaged, producing a more nutritionally dense treat.

OUR HERITAGE
Grimsby, situated on Lincolnshire’s east coast has long been established as the heart of the fishing industry within Europe and could once boast the largest deep sea trawler fleet in the world.

Trawlers were named after every football team within the English football leagues and competition amongst individual skippers to land the most valuable catch was ‘competitive’ to say the least. Although the deep sea trawlers have long since been decommissioned, the port of Grimsby remains a hive of activity with the Auction hall on the quayside still being the busiest fish auction in the country.

Fish is still brought into the town via fishing boats but also arrives by way of road transport from Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, Faroe Islands, Norway, Shetlands Islands, Holland, Denmark as well as from small fishing ports up and down the coasts of England.

The Grimsby Fish Market is recognised as being one of the most important fish markets in Europe - renowned for the quality and diversity of its fish. The facility is one of the most advanced facilities in the UK. Opened in 1996, the £15 million development was the culmination of the confidence in the future of the fishing industry in Grimsby.

The port of Grimsby is the main centre of the UK fish processing industry. In recent years, this expertise has led to diversification into all forms of frozen and chilled foods including being the home of Young’s seafood. Consequently the town is one of the single largest centres of fish processing in Europe. 85% of all fish products sold in the UK are produced in Grimsby.

From the auction halls the fish is delivered to the individual fish factories for processing and then it is delivered to inland markets like Billingsgate in London together with fish and chip shops, retail outlets, fishmongers, restaurants and hotels all around the UK and onto the continent.

MISSION STATEMENT
  1. To be your first choice supplier for quality natural seafood treats and feeds made in the UK and sourced from sustainable fisheries.
  2. We will only add natural ingredients which promote the health and well being of your pet. Our products are manufactured and dried in our human consumption Grimsby facility.
  3. We dry our fish products instead of cooking them. This process ensures that only water is removed - not intrinsic proteins or oils. We are, at present, the only producer capable of this process in the UK - other producers ‘dry’ their product by actually ‘cooking’ it.
  4. We will not use preservatives, colourings or E numbers in our products. Our products do not need them - and neither do your pets.
  5. Using our team’s expert knowledge - gained from over 100 years of combined experience within the seafood sector - we will only source local and exotic seafood, high in omega oils and rich in proteins to manufacture our pet treats and complete food range.
  6. To actively protect the environment by sourcing most of our fish products from UK fish merchants - reducing the carbon footprint to a minimum.
  7. Perserving sustainable fisheries and promoting responsible fishing, whilst avoiding products from ‘at-risk areas’.
  8. We aim to bring back manufacturing to the UK, where it belongs.
